Chto Delat (Was tun?) ist ein 2003 in St. Petersburg gegründetes Kollektiv, das Künstler, Kritiker, Philosophen und Schriftsteller aus St. Petersburg und Moskau zu seinen Mitgliedern zählt. Die Gründung ergab sich aus der dringenden Notwendigkeit, politische Theorie, Kunst und Aktivismus miteinander zu verknüpfen. Zu den Aktivitäten des Kollektivs gehören Kunstprojekte, Seminare und Öffentlichkeitskampagnen; die Palette der Produktionen reicht von Videos und Theaterstücken bis hin zu Radiosendungen und Wandbildern. Außerdem veröffentlicht das Kollektiv die zweisprachig russisch-englische Zeitung Chto Delat?, die Fragen rund um Kultur und Politik im internationalen Kontext behandelt.
Mit der Ausstellung Time Capsule. Artistic Report on Catastrophes and Utopia reagiert Chto Delat auf die aktuelle Lage in Russland, die Krise in der Ukraine und die daraus resultierende Gefahr eines neuerlichen Kalten Krieges. Zusammen mit den AbsolventInnen ihrer 2013 gegründeten Schule für engagierte Kunst in St. Petersburg liefert das Kollektiv mit der knapp einstündigen Vier-Kanal-Videoinstallation The Excluded. In a Moment of Danger eine Reflexion auf die eigene ?Ausgesetztheit? und Ratlosigkeit.
Anstelle der bisher für die Filme von Chto Delat charakteristischen dialektischen Form treten offene Erzählstrukturen und die Suche nach einer neuen Sprache, die der zugespitzten politischen Situation in Russland gerecht wird. Der Film ist in 12 Kapitel aufgeteilt und beginnt mit einer zeitlichen und räumlichen Koordinatenbestimmung der PerformerInnen. Sie beziehen sich dabei auf Ereignisse wie die Blockade Leningrads im 2. Weltkrieg und den Abschuss des Passagierflugzeugs über der Ukraine im Sommer dieses Jahres ? aktuelle wie auch historisch wichtige Momente dienen als Anhaltspunkte für eine subjektive Beschreibung des Ist-Zustandes. Die Rolle sozialer Medien in der heutigen Gesellschaft und insbesondere für politische Aktionen und Protestbewegungen wird ebenso thematisiert wie die Entwicklung junger Menschen zu politischen und selbstverantwortlichen Subjekten. Die formale Entscheidung, erstmals mit einer Vier-Kanal-Videoinstallation zu arbeiten, vermittelt die Heterogenität der Stimmen und stellt eine visuelle Entsprechung zum empfundenen Chaos dar.
Das Künstlerbuch Time Capsule. Artistic Report on Catastrophes and Utopia dokumentiert die langjährige Zusammenarbeit dieses Kollektivs, es stellt ihre Arbeit in Form einer Poster-Zeitleiste und eines Lexikons dar und beinhaltet außerdem die Ausgabe #38 der Zeitung Chto Delat?, welche in Zuge der Ausstellung produziert wurde.
Chto Delat (What is to be done?) is a collective that was founded in St. Petersburg in 2003 and counts artists, critics, philosophers, and writers from St. Petersburg and Moscow among its members. The collective responded to the urgent need to merge political theory, art, and activism. Its activities include art projects, educational seminars, and public campaigns; its productions range from video and theater plays to radio programs and murals. The collective also publishes the Russian-English newspaper Chto delat?, which covers questions of culture and politics in an international context.
With their exhibition Time Capsule. Artistic Report on Catastrophes and Utopia, Chto Delat respond to the current situation in Russia, the crisis in Ukraine, and the resulting threat of a new Cold War. Together with the graduates of the School of Engaged Art they established in Saint Petersburg in 2013, the collective has created The Excluded. In a Moment of Danger, a four-channel video installation that runs just under an hour in which they reflect on their own sense of exposure and perplexity. The dialectical form that was characteristic of Chto Delat's earlier films has given way to open narrative structures and the search for a new language adequate to the task of portraying the escalating political situation in Russia. The film is divided into twelve chapters and opens with an attempt to define the performers' temporal and spatial coordinates. The work makes mention of events such as the Leningrad Blockade during World War II and the downing of a passenger plane over Ukraine this summer?recent incidents as well as major historic episodes serve as points of reference for a subjective description of the current status quo. Chto Delat also address the role social media play in contemporary society and especially in the development of political actions and protest movements, as well as the question of how young people evolve into political subjects and learn to take responsibility for their lives. The formal decision to produce a four-channel video installation, a new format for the group, suggests the heterogeneity of voices and serves as a visual equivalent of the chaos the artists feel reigns today.

Artistic Report on Catastrophes and Utopia documenst the long time cooperation of the collective; it illustrates their oeuvre in the form of a poster timeline and a lexicon and includes issue #38 of the journal Chto Delat?, which got published in conjunction with the exhibition.
