"Vanishing Point: How to disappear in China" von Susanne Bürner ist eine Gebrauchsanweisung, wie man in China aus der Gesellschaft verschwindet. Sie propagiert ein Verschwinden aus eigener Motivation, im Gegensatz zu einem möglicherweise erzwungenen Verschwinden durch die Behörden.
Der Inhalt wurde während eines Recherche-Aufenthaltes der Künstlerin im Rahmen der Ausstellung //FREE RIDER// in Hong Kong entwickelt. Kuratiert wurde diese von Nana Seo im Experimenta Projektraum. Der Text bedient sich unterschiedlicher Quellen. Zum einen lieferten Diskussionen vor Ort Material über Mechanismen des Verschwindens in China. Zum anderen geht die Publikation auf eine amerikanische Version des Textes zurück, den die Künstlerin erstmals 2006 bei Revolver und ToastinKpress veröffentlichte.
Auch in der Gestaltung findet sich das Motiv der Gebrauchsanweisung wieder: kleines Format, Klammerheftung, Dünndruckpapier ohne verstärketes Buchcover, so daß es leicht überall hin mitgenommen werden kann.
Das Buch kann außerdem als eine Art Reisebericht von jemandem, der in den Untergrund abtaucht, gesehen werden, illustriert mit Fotos aus den Provinzen Chinas, die die Person durchquert. Sie ist einerseits physisch anwesend, andererseits von der Administration verschwunden. Sie befindet sich also in einer Art Schwebezustand zwischen Sichtbarkeit und Unsichtbarkeit.

Susanne Bürner ist Künstlerin in Berlin. Ihre Arbeit befaßt sich mit der Repräsentation von virtuellem Raum und besteht hauptsächlich aus Video, Fotografie und Künstlerbüchern. Ausstellungsorte umfassen die South London Gallery, Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin, Galerie Giti Nourbakhsch Berlin, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong, Prag Biennale, Busan Biennale und andere.
"Vanishing Point: How to disappear in China" by Susanne Bürner is a manual on how to vanish from society in China. It proposes disappearance on someone's own terms as opposed to a potentially imposed disappearance by authorities. The content of the publication has been developed by the artist during her stay in Hong Kong within the context of the exhibition // FREE RIDER//. The exhibition took place at Experimenta project space and was curated by Nana Seo. The text has been compiled for the publication from different sources. One were numerous discussions with people in Hong Kong and China on techniques of disappearance. Another source was the text on how to disappear in America, which first had been published by the artist in 2006 with Revolver and ToastinKpress.
The book being a manual is as well reflected in its design: small format, staple binding, thinprint paper, soft-cover ? it can be carried easily when on the run.
The publication can be read as a travelogue of someone going underground, the photographs in it being potential snapshots of the person crossing the Provinces of China. The person is on one hand physically present, on the other hand, has disappeared from administration. They are in a limbo between the visible and invisible.
